After having been one of several individuals approached in a clandestine manner by Don to assist in some reconnaissance of gnoll activity on the Tempest plan, we traveled to the Black Footpad Inn to meet with the cleric’s source. The informant turned out to be a firbolg named Sheppard who introduced us to our guides, a couple of identical green kobolds named Zur and Zer. The pair were rather apprehensive at traveling towards the very danger so many avoid, but otherwise seemed reliable in their limited responsibilities.
After a night spent under the stars we pressed further into the plains and very soon could not escape the incessant pounding of drums, presumably by our adversaries. White smoke was seen rising to our east, but after consulting the verdant twins Don decided it best to press on to the north. Soon however, we spotted black smoke rising and could hear the screams of innocents under duress and the party could not restrain their zeal to set things to rights. Soon a farmstead set ablaze came into view with the incursion of gnolls and their wargs rushed to meet us. I was able to layer heavy sleet onto the main structure, simultaneously putting out the flames and inhibiting the gnolls in the area to some effect. The party made short work of the hostiles, but a few did manage to escape and doubtless report to their superiors. Searching the place after dousing remaining fires a couple of interesting facts came to light. Firstly, the gnolls (who were of various tribal elements) had already carried off the farmers for nefarious purposes and secondly, upon one of the bodies of the gnolls was a rather explicit map concerning troop movements and against White Moon Cove. It was so blatant one might even question the validity, but I will let the more experienced in the ways of strategy and subterfuge determine the worth of the map. After taking some time to decipher the gnoll scrawlings it seemed the warning read something to the tune, “Eternal Pain and Suffering to whom loses this map” though with quite a deal more uncouth and expletive laden.
Regardless of my personal misgivings, Don determined this was important enough to scrap the rest of our mission and place this information in the hands of the AFK commanders. Dutifully, we headed back towards the Cove and except for a small earthquake costing Nahil a broken wrist the party returned unscathed in short order. As Moonsue says, “Opportunities multiply as they are seized” and we can, but hope the AFK can seize the opportunities faster than the gnolls and their allies.
